Abstract: Exercise in eating disorders is associated with higher levels of psychological distress and eating disorder psychopathology, higher rates of relapse, longer hospitalizations, and higher treatment costs. This presentation will review each of the major eating disorder specific exercise assessments. Attendees will learn conceptual and practical nuances that will enable them to better assess how exercise may be contributing to a client’s health. Data from residential, partial hospitalization, and outpatient treatment centers will be reviewed to illustrate how enhanced assessment can inform treatment approaches.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify how and when exercise is exacerbating eating disorders pathology and increases risk for relapse.
2. Utilize recently developed validated eating disorder specific assessment tools.
3. Explain how to use knowledge from assessments to tailor treatments and intervene on exercise.
About Brian: Dr Cook’s research focuses on the role and therapeutic potential of exercise in eating disorders. His education at the Universities of Rhode Island and Florida, and a NIMH funded post-doctoral fellowship provided training under experts in the eating disorders field. He has consistently presented research at international level conferences (e.g., invited keynote address at IAEDP 2017 symposia), published in leading journals, and written several invited book chapters. He is passionate about improving the lives of individuals and his potential for continued impact in the field of eating disorders.
