Join Amy Claire McMurtrie, MS, RDN, LDN and Katherine Jordan, MS, RDN, LDN for a webinar on Orthorexia, Diet Culture & Eating Disorders: What They Are and Clinician’s Role in Healing on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at 9:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM CT / 12:00 PM ET.
Abstract: Registered dietitians, medical providers, and therapists are often the front line of defense in recognizing when a client’s desire to “become healthy” has transformed into obsessive/pathological habits. Orthorexia is not a new idea, however, amidst the present diet culture the obsession and pre-occupation with food virtue is interfering with life function and healthful living. This presentation will briefly review each eating disorder diagnosis in the DSM-5. The term orthorexia and its origin will be defined and discussed including warning signs and client presentation. Attendees will learn basic medical complications of Anorexia Nervosa which can coincide with Orthorexia Nervosa (not a DSM-5 diagnosis). Amy- Claire and Katherine will define diet culture and explain how orthorexia and diet culture are intertwined. Lastly, the presentation will explain the role specifically of the RD and therapists in recognizing and coming alongside clients who are struggling with orthorexia like behaviors and provide practical interventions to support clients in their recovery.

2. Describe “diet culture” and how it relates to eating disorders and disordered eating (including orthorexia)
3. Describe 2 – 3 interventions dietitians can apply for those struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating (including orthorexia)
