The Path to Peace: Treating Binge Eating Disorder Through a Trauma Informed Lens

 

In this three-part presentation, the presenters will provide a background on Binge Eating Disorder, utilizing a trauma-informed lens in the treatment of BED, and weight stigma as trauma. Participants will gain an understanding of the impact of trauma on an individual, as well as the factors contributing to traumatic impact, such as severity, developmental stage, nervous system reaction, client subjectivity, and resilience. The presentation will address the topic of how weight stigma and fat phobia in treatment professionals and treatment centers needs to be part of the conversation for creating safe spaces. The Path To Peace for treatment of Binge Eating Disorder through a Trauma Informed Lens has to do with centering the marginalized voices and creating a conversation towards change.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe Binge Eating Disorder Diagnosis in individuals and identify the prevalence of BED in the general population.
  • Identify the prevalence of trauma in the being eating disorder population, as well as the signs and symptoms of trauma as it relates to food and mood.
  • Identify 3 common types of trauma stemming from impact of weight stigma and anti-fat bias.
